For reasons that are not clear, "Old Rip," a horned toad, was placed in a metal box and sealed in the cornerstone of the
courthouse at Eastland, Texas in 1896. When the box was opened in 1927, the toad was found to still be alive. "Old Rip" was x-rayed during the summer of 1928 revealing a "fracture in his left ankle." He was exhibited all over the United States and visited the White House and President Calvin Coolidge. He died 11 months later and was embalmed and placed in the Eastland Courthouse.

The first drilled oil well in Texas was drilled by Lyne T. Barret on September 12, 1866, near Melrose in Nacogdoches
County. He did it with an auger attached to a drill pipe and rotated by a cog sheel driven by a steam engine. Oil was struck
at 106 feet and the well produced 10 barrels a day.

Outmoded sugar refining equipment from Germany was used. The longest continuos cottonseed mill was the Schulenburg
Oil Mill which was built in 1883 and operated until the 1950's.

The greatest rainfall in Texas occurred in Thrall, in Williamson County on September 9-10, 1921 when 38.20 inches were
recorded. The result was severe flooding in Bexar, Travis, Williamson, Bell and Milam counties. Downtown San Antonio
had water 5-9 feet deep in the streets. 215 people lost their lives.

The shortest river in Texas, or for that matter in the United States, to carry a volume of water is the Comal River in New
Braunfels. It is 2.5 miles in length and rises inside the city limits from Comal Springs and flows into the Guadalupe River. The longest is the Rio Grande which flows between 889 and 1248 miles through Texas depending on how many of the river's bends are included in the measurements.
